Most adult Canadians eat too much fat. Eating patterns that are higher in fat are associated with a higher risk of heart disease. The strongest link is between saturated fat intake and heart disease. Some fat in the diet is necessary for good health. Fat provides twice the energy of either protein or carbohydrates. Recent trends show Canadians enjoying more starchy foods, such as whole wheat bread, brown rice, pasta, potatoes, legumes, fruits and vegetables, while cutting back on fat.
