Will It Hurt?

Be Active, Have Fun, And Think Safe!
  • Get Trained. To prevent injury, learn the correct way to do your chosen activity.
  • Allow adequate warm-up time, at least 5 – 10 minutes.
  • Gradually increase the time and intensity of the activity, as you can tolerate. Don’t overdo it and cause injury or illness.
  • Wear proper protective gear for the activity, i.e. walking shoes, helmet, mouth guard, knee pads, wrist guards, etc.
  • Check your gear. Equipment that is the right fit for you and that is in good repair will help to make your activity experience more enjoyable and safer.
  • Wear reflective clothing when out at low-light times: early morning, evening and night, as well as in poor weather.
  • If listening to music, be sure that the volume is low enough to allow you to hear what is going on around you, such as approaching cars.
  • Know and obey the rules.
  • Be aware of your personal safety. Go with a buddy.
  • Be sober. Alcohol and activity do not mix.
  • Look ahead and reduce your risk for injury.
  • Be Sun Safe. Be aware that if an activity requires the use of a helmet, a sun hat or baseball hat cannot be worn under the helmet.
  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites.
Have Fun! Be Smart Stay Safe!

When proper steps are taken to reduce risk for injury, most exercise-related injuries are relatively small compared to the potential for ill-health due to an inactive lifestyle.
